Fatigue is one of the most common reasons people come to see us at Brightmark Health. If you’ve been feeling chronically tired – despite getting “enough” sleep – you’re not alone. But that doesn’t mean you have to accept it as your new normal.

While many people assume fatigue must mean a thyroid problem, the reality is that there are many causes of fatigue and tiredness – and figuring out what’s really going on takes time, attention, and the right approach.

Fatigue Isn’t Always Just One Thing

Tiredness can stem from physical, emotional, hormonal, or lifestyle-related issues—or a combination of several. Some of the most common causes include:

🛌 Poor Sleep Quality

  • Insomnia
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (often undiagnosed!)
  • Restless legs or other nighttime disruptions

💊 Hormonal or Metabolic Imbalances

  • Thyroid dysfunction (yes, it’s a possibility – but not the only one)
  • Diabetes or prediabetes
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Vitamin deficiencies, especially B12 or vitamin D

🧠 Mental Health Conditions

  • Depression and anxiety can both sap energy – even without obvious sadness or worry
  • Mental fatigue often presents with physical symptoms

⚖️ Electrolyte Abnormalities

  • Imbalances in sodium, potassium, calcium, or magnesium can affect how your muscles and nerves function

🍽️ Lifestyle Factors

  • Poor diet, dehydration, sedentary routines
  • Alcohol or caffeine overuse
  • Chronic stress or burnout

How We Approach Fatigue at Brightmark Health

We don’t jump to conclusions or run a generic “fatigue panel” and send you on your way. Our approach starts with listening carefully and understanding the full context of your health.

1. Detailed History & Physical Exam

We ask about:

  • Sleep patterns and habits
  • Energy fluctuations during the day
  • Mood and stress levels
  • Medications and supplements
  • Diet and hydration
  • Menstrual or hormonal changes (if relevant)

A thorough physical exam can also offer important clues.

2. Targeted Lab Work

We don’t over-test, but we do order labs thoughtfully. These may include:

  • Thyroid function (TSH, free T4)
  • Blood sugar (glucose, A1c)
  • Complete blood count (looking for anemia or infection)
  • Electrolytes and kidney function
  • Vitamin levels (B12, D)
  • Cortisol or other hormone testing (if appropriate)

3. Sleep and Mental Health Evaluation

If we suspect sleep apnea, we may order a home sleep study. If symptoms point toward depression or anxiety, we’ll talk through those possibilities and make a plan together, whether that’s therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or medication support.

Fatigue Is a Symptom, Not a Diagnosis

Our job is to investigate and connect the dots. In some cases, the cause is simple and easily treated. In others, it takes time and a bit of trial-and-error to uncover what’s really draining your energy. Either way, you’ll have a partner in the process.
